NAACP Kicks Registration into Hyperdrive
With court rulings on restrictive voter laws coming down the pike and registration deadlines quickly approaching, the NAACP, National Council of La Raza, Voter Participation Center and additional partners are taking their voter registration efforts to the next level. In the coming weeks nearly 4 million Americans will receive voter registration materials for their state. Americans will be able to check their registration status or obtain a registration application online thanks to the efforts of non-partisan organizations and outreach.
In addition to current voter suppressive tactics, a large number of eligible voters are not registered-- almost 40 percent of eligible African American voters and nearly half of all eligible Hispanic voters, and young people (18-29) are not registered to vote.
“Our democracy is strongest when the greatest number of people can take part,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “This year, the NAACP will continue our tried-and-true approaches to expanding the electorate, but we are also excited to deploy new digital tools that can provide information faster and reach wider and younger audiences than ever before. We need to use every tool at our advantage to make sure this democracy is ‘of the people.’”
